What happened in 1999?

This was the first election to the reconvened Scottish Parliament. Labour emerged as the largest party with 56 seats.

Scottish Parliament elections use the Additional Member System: 73 constituency MSPs are combined with 56 regional MSPs. The two ballots mean constituency and regional vote shares are separate measures.
