What happened in 2017?

The snap election was the first held after the Assembly was reduced from 108 to 90 MLAs. The DUP finished one seat ahead of Sinn Féin.

Northern Ireland Assembly elections use Single Transferable Vote (STV). At this election, each of the 18 constituencies returned five MLAs. First-preference vote share is therefore only one part of the count because later preferences can transfer between candidates.
