What happened in 2016?

The DUP remained the largest party with 38 seats. This was the final election at which six MLAs were returned from each of the 18 constituencies.

Northern Ireland Assembly elections use Single Transferable Vote (STV). At this election, each of the 18 constituencies returned six MLAs. First-preference vote share is therefore only one part of the count because later preferences can transfer between candidates.
