Origins

Allister had represented the DUP in the European Parliament but left after the party agreed to share power with Sinn Féin following the St Andrews negotiations. TUV was established for unionists who believed the DUP had compromised too far.

Opposition to the post-1998 institutions

The party has consistently criticised the institutional arrangements created by the Good Friday Agreement, particularly mandatory coalition. It has also opposed post-Brexit arrangements that it argues create barriers between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

Electoral development

For much of its early history TUV was strongly associated with Allister and remained smaller than the DUP and UUP, while retaining representation at Stormont and in local government. At the 2024 general election Allister won North Antrim, giving the party representation at Westminster.

TUV’s development is therefore closely tied to debates within unionism about whether the institutions created since 1998 should be operated, reformed or fundamentally replaced.
