BIOGRAPHY · EARLY LIFE AND CAREER
Dan Norris worked in child protection and ran a business before entering Parliament. He first won Wansdyke for Labour in 1997 and represented it until 2010. During that period he served as a government whip and later as a junior environment minister, developing an interest in rural affairs and animal welfare.
After leaving the Commons, Norris returned to elected office as Mayor of the West of England in 2021. He won North East Somerset and Hanham for Labour in July 2024, returning to Westminster after fourteen years. He continued briefly as regional mayor before his successor took office.
In April 2025 Norris lost the Labour whip following his arrest in connection with allegations of sexual offences and has since sat as an independent. In October 2026 police confirmed that evidence had been submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service for a charging decision. Norris has denied the allegations. They remain allegations, not findings of guilt. His political career spans two distinct periods in the Commons and executive office in the West of England.
