BIOGRAPHY · EARLY LIFE AND CAREER
Carla Lockhart: biography and parliamentary career
Carla Lockhart grew up on her family's farm outside Aughnacloy in County Tyrone. She attended Aughnacloy College before studying business at the University of Ulster. Inspired by the politics of Ian Paisley and Peter Robinson, she joined the Democratic Unionist Party while at university and became active in local government.
First elected a councillor in Lurgan in 2007, Lockhart went on to become the final mayor of Craigavon Borough Council before local government reorganisation. She won an Upper Bann seat in the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2016, then moved to Westminster in 2019 as the constituency's DUP MP. Her career has therefore spanned all three levels of elected politics.
Lockhart has opposed abortion-law reform in Northern Ireland and used her maiden Commons speech to address the issue, alongside support for special educational needs and mental health provision. Her political stance is closely associated with traditional unionism and socially conservative causes. She lives with her husband Rodney, who works as a quantity surveyor and farmer, and their son. Her rural upbringing remains central to the personal account on her website.
