BIOGRAPHY · EARLY LIFE AND CAREER
Shockat Adam was born in Malawi and moved with his family to Leicester when he was a young child. He grew up in the city and studied optometry at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. He became an optometrist and helped run family optical practices serving customers in Leicester and Peterborough. His work in healthcare and business preceded his move into national politics.
Before the 2024 general election, Adam had not been a member of a political party. He stood as an independent candidate in Leicester South and defeated Labour's Jonathan Ashworth by 979 votes. His campaign highlighted the humanitarian situation in Gaza, as well as local public services, health provision and the cost of living. Following his election, he joined a group of independent MPs coordinating parliamentary work.
Adam has drawn on his experience in optometry to raise questions about access to eye care, health inequalities and support for smaller businesses. He has also campaigned on human rights, community relations and international policy, while dealing with local issues affecting Leicester South. His parliamentary interests combine constituency representation, public accountability and the experience of running a healthcare practice.
