BIOGRAPHY · EARLY LIFE AND CAREER

MP: biography and parliamentary career

Ayoub Khan grew up in Aston, Birmingham, in a large working-class family. He trained as a barrister after earlier involvement in community work and built his professional career representing clients in legal proceedings. Alongside his legal work, he entered local politics and served as a councillor for the Aston ward of Birmingham City Council.

At the 2024 general election, Khan stood as an independent in Birmingham Perry Barr and defeated Labour, winning one of several seats where Gaza and foreign policy featured prominently in the local campaign. Unlike MPs who had progressed through a Westminster party machine, he entered Parliament as an established local politician and legal professional without a party whip.

He has continued to sit as an independent and has raised local service provision and international issues in Parliament. Khan has emphasised the importance of representation outside traditional party structures and remains associated with Aston, the area where he grew up. His combination of professional advocacy in the courts and local electoral experience preceded his unexpected parliamentary victory.
