More votes for Farage, with a different field

Farage first won Clacton at the 2024 general election with 21,225 votes, 46.2% of the vote and a majority of 8,405 over Conservative Giles Watling. He increased his vote total by 1,014 in the by-election despite lower turnout.

His share rose by around 17 percentage points, but the absence of the main rival parties makes that increase difficult to compare with a normal general election contest. Voters who previously supported those parties faced a very different choice on the ballot paper.

Count Binface secured more than a quarter of the valid votes. The remaining 32 candidates shared fewer than one vote in ten, with Rejoin EU’s John Stevens finishing third on 492.

Farage’s win returns him to Parliament as the Reform UK MP for Clacton. The result shows that he retained enough local support to win comfortably, although this unusual contest offers limited evidence about Reform’s position against Labour or the Conservatives nationally.
