Labour’s 2024 majority overturned
Gwynne won 18,555 votes in 2024 and a majority of 13,413. Labour’s vote in the by-election was 9,191 lower, and its share fell from approximately 50.8% to 25.4%.
The Greens increased their vote from 4,810 to 14,980, while Reform rose from 5,142 to 10,578. Turnout stayed close to its general election level, so the changes in the leading parties’ vote totals were substantial even without a large increase in participation.
The Conservative and Liberal Democrat candidates each received less than 2%. Between them, the Greens and Reform secured almost seven in ten valid votes, leaving Labour behind two parties which had finished well below it in 2024.
Gorton and Denton elected Spencer as its new MP, but the totals alone cannot show which previous Labour voters switched to the Greens or Reform, or how many people abstained. Establishing those movements would require evidence beyond the count.
